Cumbersome when compared to other noise cancelling headphones as well as HUGE case. The WH-1000XM4 case is very slim, sleek, and compact - something easily carried on a plane where one would expect to use it most. The WH-1000XM5 case is BULKY, oddly shaped, and definitely not something that can be easily carried on a plane and utilized. The main reason for this is that the headphones dont fold like the XM4s do which is a HUGE disadvantage in my opinion. I personally dont care for the on/off button either. Many other higher-end noise cancelling headphones utilize the tilting headphone as the on/off activation which is easy, efficient, and preserves the battery. And an app ... why on earth does one need an APP in order to use the headphones. The only thing these headphones really have going for them is their noise cancelling ability and battery life are good. The negatives far outweigh the positives for the XM5s. Save your money and buy the XM4s or even another brand if truly looking for an exceptional set of headphones as these definitely are not in my humble opinion.

For so long, I yearned for a true headphones to give me the true connection to my soul when listening to my music. I have swap, switch, swing, and had a lot of one night stands with many. But nothing has made me fall in love at first sound until now. I am a firm believer there is a true sound at first ear for everyone and this is the one. I don’t know if I can yearn for anything else beyond this majestic piece of love juice. My ears melt at first touch of the soft silky pads. The girth of the the band brings amazing feeling around my head caressing me and reminding me it loves me unconditionally. As the sound pours through my ears with it soft whispers and vigor bass, I am at awe and excitement at every song, music, and instrumental I have heard before, but now it is uncharted territory for my ear pleasure. The vibration is so subtle and invigorating making me spew of oohs and ahhs. I kid you not, get these headphones and you will melt into the dimension of this love making machine. Thank you Sony ❤️

I loved these headphones, and they are very nice in every way. Great sound quality for being Bluetooth. The side touch panel was quite annoying, as I would go to turn up the volume right before the chorus of the song just to be met with my song skipping to the next song. Because when you wear the headphones they sit on an angle on your ear so that they fit the shape of your ear. So often when I try to swipe up to turn up the sound I instead input the command to skip the song forward or backward. Dont know how this happens so easily. THE PROBLEM: I do not know if I have a faulty pair but in the past week of me having them (purchased 24 days ago) I have noticed twice now that I will be listening to music then suddenly I will be met with a jarring sound (nearly a screech) for around 4-6 seconds before my headphones suddenly stop my music and disconnect from my phone. The first time this happened it was as I was taking my headphones off, I put them back on to hear the continuing screeching then the headphones turned off without me pressing the power button. The second time this happened was when I was just listening to music, my hand never even reached for the headphones when suddenly the screech came up and shut off my headphones. I have no idea what is causing this, both times my headphones were sufficiently charged. I would be willing to send these in if it meant I got a full refund. I would totally recommend these to anyone, but then this happened to my 400-dollar headphones... now I am questioning the quality of this product and whether or not this model is prone to bugs in their system. Trying to get a refund now...

Well, it lived up to the hype. The sound quality was superb for my listening requirements. The noise cancelling is the best Ive experienced in any Earphones Ive ever had. Its perfect for flights and removing ambient noise to enhance your listening experience. Im rarely surprised by tech doing what it says it will do without some caveat. Id highly recommend these.

The sound is great and noise canceling is a plus. Really like that the batteries hold a charge for a lot longer that l thought they would.

The sound and noise cancelation is very good. I hate the volume control though, it is very finicky. I also wish the app would allow you to lock it to one device while it is connected to multiple devices. When I am listening to something on my tablet, if the sound pauses for even a microsecond it always switches over to my TV audio device. I dont want it to switch unless I tell it to. It is a major pain having to constantly reopen the app and switch it back. (hoping somebody at Sony reads this)

First I had the XM2,3,4 so I loved this type of Sony headphones but this is probably last one. Right from the start, it feel cheap. They cut back on material to save cost it seemed. They cut back on feature such as NFC. And you cant fold it anymore with this new design. Initially, you cant turn off adaptive sound control which means the headohone will automatically change noise cancelling to ambient sound base on your action. Look, I only wear this indoor so I always just need Noise Cancelling! Their stupid new tech will always get it wrong and when it changes, it took about 2 seconds. Its very annoying! Edit: Okay, they did update the adaptive sound control so we can in fact leave it to just noise cancelling 100% of the time. But it shouldnt need an update just to do this. Now, finally the nail to coffin is this thing sometimes couldnt stop beeping! With their touchpad control, when you tap left or right of the headphone, you are suppose to hearing a tiny beep as feedback so that youd know you tap it 3 times for example. But on mine, when absolutely nothing is touching those touchpad, it kept on beeping sometimes. In worst case scenario, it beeps hundreds of times per minute forcing me to turn it off and turn it back on to solve it temporarily..... Now, please understand, I went through internets trying to resolved this. People have had this problem on Sonys forum and many others discussion site such as StackExchange and reddit. NO, I cant do anything in option to stop it. My touchpad control option was already OFF. It was always off because Ive never need to use it. The Quick Access settings are always NONE because once again, I never need to change it from Noise Cancelling. Please believe me, Ive search through forums, tried every possible options in the app, NONE of them work.... The only conclusion at the end of every discussion is Sony must update it so that it could be an option from the app. But as of June of 2023, there was no option to turn the beeps off! This of course is deal breaker for me which is a shame because I always preferred Sony NC and sound quality and the XM5 sound quality is great when it wasnt interrupted by uncontrollable beeping. I believe Ill try Bose next year.

I fly often. I use noise cancelling headphones to make my plane time more peaceful and enjoyable. I owned the M4s for a while and loved them, so when Sony brought the M5 to market, I couldnt wait. I was hesitant to pay this kind of money, of course, but I read several professional reviews that raved about them. I will say right up front, I just couldnt hear any difference in the noise cancelling from my M4s. I gave my M4s to my partnerer who travels with me most of the time, so I am able to switch with her for comparison. I just cant hear a difference. But, Im that guy who always wants the latest and the best in tech, so I thought I would be happy. Heres the thing. My new M5s are constantly shifting the noise canceling. Im sitting on the plane listening to relaxing music and it is like they shift from canceling to ambient noise. It lasts for 5-10 seconds, then they shift back. It happend every 5 minutes or so. I have tried turning off adaptive sound control, but it doesnt make a difference. Unfortunately, I went a while without traveling right after I purchased these and so didnt really start experiencing this until a while after purchasing. It is probably to late to return, but I will try. My advice would be to save the money and buy the M4s. They are certainly cheaper and in my experience, much better.
