Meze 99 Classics Walnut Gold | Wired Over-Ear Headphones with Mic and Self Adjustable Headband | Classic Wooden Closed-Back Headset for Audiophiles

Been listening to these for about a week on a THX 789 and geshelli labs enog2. Like they claim, these closed-back headphones are incredibly easy to drive making them a very good option for use in public or on airplanes where sound leak might be an issue. These headphones definitely make a statement with their form factor and the sound is no different. The 99 Classics have accentuated bass, creamy mids, and highs that roll off towards the top. That makes these very pleasing and non-fatiguing set of cans for most people that dont need every single piercing detail. They have a surprisingly wide soundstage for closed cans and the imaging seems to be accurate. Theyre comfortable to top it off, but they are closed so they might get hot during long listening sessions in the summer. Build quality is very good and i have no worries about throwing them into my backpack with the included carry case. Only real complaint for the headphones is the included wire is really long and unless youre plugging into the back of your computer youre probably gonna end up braiding it. Very highly recommended for those looking to sit back and fade away into a sweet world of personal audio.

The classic 99s have to be my favorite pair of headphones. I would like to thank dankpods for the amazing suggestion for these. They have become my most used headphones to wear around home. I even got the balanced output cable and the food btr5 and its a match made in heaven

Own a pair of Bllue Lolas, have bought and/or returned Beyerdynamic DT770 pro (80 ohm and 32 ohm) Klipsch reference and Sennheiser Audio Technica over ear monitors (can remember if 40 or 50). The Beyers produced great sound but didnt produce the low in sub bass the way the lolas do. Lolas sound great but are very heavy because of the metal and cause (me) neck pain after about an hour. Didnt like the Klipsch or Sennheisers at all. But these, these are absolutely crazy, right out of the box. Great materials which make the headphones feel very sturdy while also being very light on the head. Barely feel them after two hours. And what a wonderful two hours; paired with a oneplus 6t running jamesdsp and viper (not at the same time, of course) with a soundblaster headphone amp and wordima external DAC. Took whatever i had to dish out with distortion. Bass response all the way down to 15hz that is accurate without being boomy (although, the headphone are very sensitive to eq adjustment and can be made boomy if that is your thing) while the sound stage is wide and crystal clear. Some songs I have been listening too for years sound brand new. I cant gush about these enough. If $300 is too much (the ball and chain wasnt happy) then drop will have them for less in a few weeks. Buy them!!! *UPDATE* Have broken these in and switched from the 6T to the S10+, which supports LDAC, and these are now perfect. No bleeding in any region and there is no noise at all. I now perceive parts of the songs I couldnt hear before, including in my car (2015 300S with beats). Couldnt be happier with purchase. BUY THEM!!!

After about a year of reading reviews that were all praising these headphones I finally decided to buy it and I am absolutely convinced! The clarity of the sound is the one I was expecting! The whole thing is so light yet the sound is heavily present! (Dont forget to play so some songs for about 48h to give it time to express itself at the fullest)

These are some of the best headphones Ive ever owned. They sound great, fit well and are comfortable. They even cancel out outside noise. Downside is they create their own noise that does not get canceled out. Especially notable if you take them on a walk. The metal band on arching over the top is loud if anything touches it. even just rubbing your finger over it is too much interference. The cord makes noise if it bumps or rubs against anything, but its not as bad as the overhead metal band. Youll notice the downside if youre sitting back and move your head around or if your scratch your head and bump the metal band on top. or if the wires are rubbing anything. Laying still its fine, walking around its mostly the wire rubbing on your clothing thats noticeable. I love the look and the sound of these headphones. Hopefully a successor will come out that fixes the small problems. Theyll be perfect then.

I love how ridiculously gaudy they are. The sound is good but I dont think they sound noticeably better than Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. And at almost half the price, Id have to recommend the latter. For reference: I have probably a little-above-average ear for sound. I used to do amateur soundboard mixing, and I like to think I appreciate a good variety of music. That said, I would not consider myself an audiophile.

I’m rarely surprised by headphones. If anything, most of the time I am slightly let down, I think a headphone is going to sound great, but it then disappoints. With the Meze 99 Classics, it was the complete opposite; I thought they were just going to be another pretty face, a headphone focusing more on looks than sound, but I was SO wrong, so VERY wrong. The Meze 99 is now one of my favorite headphones. I‘m blown away by so many aspects of the 99, let me share those with you. *Accessories* The hard case itself is just awesome, as it is solid and understandingly handsome. Inside the case you will find the 99 Classics sitting snug and safe along with another small, softer case for the cables. It is a fully function and well laid out design. *Build* Over the top, beautiful; that is how I describe the Meze 99 Classics. It is truly an elegant and tough built headphone. This is a headphone that exquisite blends wood and metal. You can tell Meze used very high end materials for this build, that include: “CNC carved wood ear cups, cast zinc alloy hardware with electroplated coating, stamped manganese spring steel headband, memory foam and soft PU leather”. What caught my attention are the two braided cables. One shorter with a microphone and one much longer without a mic (forgive me; I do not have exact lengths of each cable at this time). Both cables are quite beautiful and have a very premium feel. Now, while I am more of a Function over form kind of guy, I feel like as long as it sounds good, it can also look this good. I just hate when companies care about looks and catch phrases over actual sound substance. With the Meze, there is no need to worry in any of those departments though. *Fit* These are clearly an over ear headphone. Comfort and distance around the ears is very good. The only issue some might have is the pads getting a little warm with extended use, though I do love how soft the PU leather is, it is like a pillow around the ear. The headband is very similar to the AKG K 240, with the headphone automatically adjusting to your head with some cleverly placed elastic materials. I wish more headphones were like this as it allows for a perfect and quick fit. *Sound* Bass – Does play a prominent role in the Meze 99 Classics sound signature. There is a lot of warmth and fullness down low. While I would say for the most part the bass stays controlled, it can wander a tad out of hand here and there. Sub-bass kick is wonderful, a lot of force with its bite. Mids – I have a soft spot for the 99’s mids. They are just north of neutral, while also being dynamic and detailed. I think this is why I like these headphones so much, the middle is a great place to be. A lot of speed, action and clarity resonate from here; this is where the magic happens. Highs – While the Meze 99 Classics don’t extend too high, I never feel a loss of detail. A slightly early roll off leads to a smoothness and sophistication not often heard with many other headphones I have heard recently. Isolation – Due to the easy fit and soft leather pads, the Meze 99 Classics can form quite a nice seal. That seal in return leads to a really nice isolating headphone. I just had my friend try these out a few minute ago while I was writing this, he was really impress how well these headphones block off noise. He thought they were even noise canceling, until I quickly corrected him. Soundstage – Here I found the biggest surprise the 99 Classics had to offer, a huge, well-tuned soundstage. It is so wide, yet instrument separation stays so crisp and organized. I honestly can figure out how Meze got this broad feeling from a closed, well isolating headphone, it is remarkable. *Overall Thoughts* As I you will have concluded from my review, I really like the Meze 99 Classics. I think they are extremely fun and energetic, making them an obvious guilty pleasure for me. They are analytical in their approach, yet still stay away from the label of monitoring. They look incredible and have the personality to back it up. I’ve reviewed over 30+ headphones this year alone and the Meze is a bright spot among them. A surprise I honestly did not see coming. The 99 Classics is truly a great overall headphone for those looking for a warm, entertaining and detailed musical experience. ~All photos for this review were taken by me~

Good looks, great fit, great sound.

I have heard instruments and background that I have not heard before using these headphones. These headphones are so enjoyable and surprising because it makes listening to my LPs a new experience. I am a hearing aid user. I had to use semi-closed domes to keep feedback down. But this is a minor issue. The reason for the four star review is that the cord is not coiled. I have stepped on it several times and yanked it out of the jacks on the headphones and audio receiver. Thankfully the cord did not break.
