LG UltraFine UHD 27-Inch 4K UHD 2160p Computer Monitor 27UN850-W, IPS with VESA DisplayHDR 400, AMD FreeSync, and USB-C, White

I have four 4K monitors: LG 27UN850-W X2, one desk dual monitor setup (will be referred below as LG) Dell U2720Q X2, one desk dual monitor setup (will be referred below as Dell) I use LG, my spouse uses Dell. In my mind LG is better to fit my needs. From my spouses point of view, Dell is preferred over LG. 1. Why does LG better fit my needs? a) both LG and Dell have anti-glare screens. But I found Dell reflects a little bit more than LG. I have a “designer white” desk. Dell’s reflection is noticeable especially during the evening when using the desk lamp and watching videos. On the other hand, LG does not distract my attention due to glare. The Dell glare issue could be a combination of my desk color and light source setup. But given the exact same setup, LG does not distract my attention due to reflection. b) LG has ports arrangement on the back, rather than at the bottom. I’d like to try different gadgets during the past weeks. The LG’s design makes it super convenient to plug/unplug cables, firetv stickers. Dell’s traditional port design also works well thanks to the best ergonomics stands (will come to it later). Adding devices/cable to Dell just by simply rotating the screen. c) LG has a user-friendly screen control joystick. Dell’s traditional button is not comparable. Again, because I’d like to change settings, and try different gadgets. 2. Why does Dell better fit my spouses needs? Ergonomics, ergonomics, ergonomics! My spouse needs ergonomic monitor stands. Dell’s design fits the bill perfectly. A complete freedom of adjustment with extremely wide ranges, at any direction. 3. What do the two monitors share in common? They are all very good monitors for regular day to day work/entertainment. Again we are not professional graphic designers nor video editors. For average users like us, you cannot go wrong with either LG/Dell. For most of the time, all our monitors work in reader/office/text mode. When it comes to entertainment, LG/Dell, for me, do not make much difference. I cannot tell the difference when watching videos or playing games, or editing family photos. They look pretty much the same for casual entertainment. I also placed the LG/Dell side by side, playing the same youtube 4K HDR videos with all monitors in full HDR settings, but I cannot tell which is better. They all calibrated to their own standards. In their own “reference frame”, they all look very beautiful. Btw, isn’t the best entertainment to find a job to do what you like? The office/text mode might be the best entertainment mode for me :-) Finally, because this is my serious review under this LG product tag. I will add 3 more points for LG only: 1. LG has a bulky voltage transformer shown in the picture. The power cable on each side of the voltage transformer is about 55 inch (total about 110 inch including the transformer in the middle), long enough for any home office setup. However, for a standing desk, I have to spend a bit extra effort to hide the bulky transformer in the cable management tray. 2. One of the LG monitors has a very tiny issue with the stand. I returned it and bought a new one. The problem went away. 3. LG has a builtin speaker that can be easily used with fireTV stick 4K, just plug and play. If I want to control volume, I’m using the LG monitor joystick, or a separate speaker or a bluetooth (Jabra evolve 75), where output device with builtin volume controls. The joystick also makes the hdmi input switch very easy, fireTV to Nvidia Quadro, very smooth joystick operation. But better to get a 4K HDMI switch.

I purchased this monitor to get more screen real estate for working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its great to be able to have a Zoom or Teams meeting going, have a document or browser window open, and to be able to keep an eye on my email without having to constantly minimize or move windows around. The image quality is excellent - very sharp and clear with natural looking color. Contrast is also very good, although black levels are not as good as on a higher end modern television or mobile device with an OLED panel. But, you really only notice at night in a darker room. The matte screen also lets me have my home office setup in front of a set of windows without fighting glare. Onscreen text looks great, and the night mode preset that lowers brightness levels and shifts whites to a warmer hue is also nice when working late. Video looks very good, although I havent been able to get Netflix and Amazon to stream to the monitor in 4K. Im using the latest and greatest version of usb-c to connect to a late-model HP laptop. If anyone has troubleshooting tips, let me know. But, non-protected 4k content from sites like YouTube looks great. This monitor doesnt have a high refresh rate by 2020 standards, though, so gamers and people watching live sports might be happier looking elsewhere. The 2-way adjustability of this monitor makes it really comfortable to use for long workdays. The stand is also surprisingly solid and more premium than it looks in the photos. I assumed it would be plastic, but its metal. So, I have no worries about accidentally tipping the monitor off my desk when adjusting the screen. It is also ingeniously simple to assemble without tools or messing with a bunch of little screws. Overall, this is an almost ideal monitor for working from home, and LG seems to have prioritized productivity over entertainment in its design choices, which is great for me. It has a modern, minimalist design compared to a lot of other options with overwrought styling intended to appeal to gamers, which is nice since my office is also our family room. And, IMHO, matte screens are MUCH more pleasant for reading and writing than glossy models. Highly recommended.

I ordered this monitor hoping to save some space and money over going the route of a traditional 4K monitor and a USB-C/Thunderbolt docking station for my macbook. I was hoping to be able to use one cable for video, data and charging. It works, most of the time, but the USB-C features on this monitor have some frustrating issues. The monitor has issues charging my macbook, sometimes dropping the charge current to less than 10 watts, or other times stopping it entirely, which can only be resolved by power cycling the monitor. Im not sure what the power rating of the USB-A ports on the back of the monitor is. They work well enough with thumb drives, graphic tablets, keyboard & Mice, other low current items, but trying to charge an iphone from them causes a USB power error message to pop up. The audio output on the monitor is not always detected by my laptop, and often requires disconnecting and reconnecting the USB-C cable to get it to work. The mute and volume keys on the apple keyboard are disabled when using the monitors audio output which is a common problem with many cheaper digital audio interfaces, but is still frustrating when compared to dedicated desktop hubs, or USB-C monitors from Dell or Apple which still allow you to use these keys. I downloaded the software package from LG hoping that it would include drivers to enable these features or improve the reliability of the other USB-C features but it does not change anything. The display itself is gorgeous and I have no problems or complaint with it as just a monitor, but I think the USB-C implementation fails to justify its added cost over the displayport only version of the same monitor. Im making it work but will probably purchase a thunderbolt 3 hub eventually to hopefully handle charging and audio more reliably. I love the image quality of the 4k display but if I were to do it again I would either get the cheaper displayport only version of the monitor and an external hub or look at options from Dell or another manufacturer.

This is by far my favorite monitor for my Macbook Air M1 2020. I love the colors right out of the box. I actually enjoy looking at this monitor more than looking at the screen on my Mac. The letters are so sharp and the colors vibrant. For the price, you are getting a high-quality monitor that makes the perfect friend for your Mac. I use Illustrator and Photoshop a lot and this monitor makes me stay focused on designing and be more creative. I highly recommend it.

Theres no auto-switch for input source??? What the hell LG are we living in 2023???

I just moved from a retina iMac to a Mac Studio and was looking for a monitor that was as good as the retina in the iMac. First off, nothing is as good as the retina iMac screen except the new $1,500 Apple monitor. But, this LG gets you 99% of the way there. It takes a little fiddling to get the resolution right but after working with it a couple of weeks, I cant tell the difference between this monitor and the iMac when writing code - working with text. No idea about games or professional graphics. As far as casual watching YouTube and web browsing its every bit as good as the retina iMacs. I liked it so much, I got a 2nd one to connect to the Mac Studio replacing an older 27 Apple Thunderbolt display. The monitor works great out of the box with the included USB-C cable. I now have 2 connected via the USB-C cables and they are great. Probably the only downside is the built in speaker. Its no where near what the iMacs speakers sound like. To solve that one, I found a Nylavee sound bar and it fits snugly under the monitor. One other issue I have not solved yet and it could be self inflicted is the computer sometimes will not go to sleep from the sleep menu the first try. Another issue is open apps dont always stay on the 2nd monitor when the computer wakes up. This is a known problem when using non Apple displays so it might have to be something to live with until Apple has time to stop making new emojis and fix a few bugs in their software. Now Im back to what I had with the iMac, except now I have 10 cores and blazing speed.

Great color and clarity. Connects quickly and easily with my M1 Max Macbook Pro. I knocked off one star because the included USB C cable is pretty short and the monitor doesnt work with anything but the included cables. I tried 2 different USB C cables from Apple and a generic one and neither worked. I called LG and they said they dont make a longer one and that is the only one that works with the monitor. I use 2 of these monitors with my laptop so a longer cable would make it much more convenient to connect the one thats furthest away from the computer.

Had it paired with my Mac Studio. Like the color and text, but the back of the monitor looks very cheap. It’s not a pretty white/silver plastic. I end up returning it.

Not the greatest monitor I’ve ever owned but not bad for the price. Only gripes: 1. The arching stand is atheistically pleasing but functionally ridiculous. Takes up a great deal of real estate on the desk and does not seem as stable as a more traditional monitor stand. 2. Why on earth would anyone send the manual on CD in the year 2023? Either print out a one pager on how to navigate the menu system or give us a QR code to find it on your website. I just want to plug and play, not go through a wild goose chase to find out how to use all the features I paid for.

I use this monitor to edit in Lightroom and Final Cut and it is really good especially because I can connect my MacBook to it via thunderbolt. The only time I see issues is when im gaming! The the monitor sometimes glitches and its not very good with dark settings but other than that the colors are perfect if youre just editing or making content.
